How to say “not for me” without an apology
You can appreciate someone’s intention and still decline an intimate suggestion. A boundary does not need a long defense.
Make the answer clear
Use language that describes your decision: “I do not want to try that,” or “I would rather leave that out.” Avoid turning a no into a maybe just to soften the moment. You can be considerate without inviting negotiation over something you have already decided.
Offer an alternative only if you want one
If another kind of connection appeals to you, you can suggest it. You do not owe an alternative in exchange for declining. If you need time to think, say that directly and avoid promising an answer on someone else’s schedule. Your decision can also change later.
Notice how the answer is received
A respectful conversation leaves space for disappointment without pressure, bargaining, or punishment. If you feel unsafe setting a boundary, focus on your safety and reach out to someone you trust or an appropriate local support service. General conversation scripts are not a solution to coercion or abuse.
